Santa María del Río, home of the rebozos since 1589, is located between the city of Querétaro and San Luis Potosí in the state of Guanajuato. Luis Enrique Rodríguez Ribera was born here and works as a member of a community workshop. He was taught the preparation of the rebozo as were his parents and generations before that — since 1800.

It takes from one to three months to finish a rebozo as there are 25 different steps that are complex and laborious. Enrique weaves authentic and unique rebozos. His talent, dedication and skill can be admired in the finished product. He weaves in silk, a silk called artisela which is synthetic, since silk is more expensive and difficult to obtain and cotton.

Enrique relates his sadness of his craft being lost to time — every day this tradition is closer to extinction, because young people are not attracted to this work; it takes a lot of time, is a complex process, the weavers are not generally well paid — this work simply does not suit the younger generation economically. Machine-made rebozos are also pushing the rebozos artisan out of the market — they are cheaper and faster to produce even though they will not withstand the test of time as will a hand-woven rebozo.

Purchasing a rebozo at the Feria from Enrique not only provides you with a beautiful piece of wearable art, it also helps Enrique continue on with his trade. The value of these rebozos cannot be measured solely in economic terms; their value is in their cultural identity and tradition.
