Paraje Yaalboc is a Tzotzil pueblo high up above San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas where the mountains are covered with oaks and pine trees and the small communities dedicate themselves to making wooden toys and games. It is very close to San Cristóbal and yet seems isolated high up in the clouds with vistas towards San Cristóbal, Chamula and Chenalhó.

Javier Hernández López was born in Yaalboc just like his father and grandfather and dedicates himself to his trade with the help of his family and a couple of workers. He has a nice workshop with all the tools he needs and is a meticulous man, taking great care of the toys he and his family make. On the neatly organized shelves you can see trucks, trains, birds, jaguars and all kinds of wonderful surprises for the children.

He worked for 29 years for the pueblo´s cooperative, but it closed in 2010 and he purchased the tools that were left and continued on his own. In the 1970s, a German toy maker came to help the cooperative giving them designs and helping to streamline their process. The quality of the old-fashion toys is high and the children love the bright colors of the articulated animals and characters. Javier´s wife dedicates herself to making little indigenous men and women out of corn husks. These little men and women are used in the Ferris wheel and in the rustic créche.

Javier has won several competitions at the state level and his toys can be found at the Instituto de la Casa de Artesanias de Chiapas in Tuxtla. As the house is a little remote, it is recommended to make an appointment if you want to visit.

To drive there from the Periferico Norte take the Santa Cruz road at the mosque and drive up eight kilometers and up  to Yaalboc . When you arrive in Yaalboc ask for Javier Antun el juguetero.
