Chachilhuitan is one of the municipalities of Chiapas located in green mountains covered with woods of pine, oaks and cypress and is located between the municipalities of Simojovel, Pantelhó, Chenalhó, Larrainzar and El Bosque. The people work as farmers. The area is very beautiful but, unfortunately, there is an ongoing political conflict. If you visit, you should be accompanied by a local to ensure your safety.

This area produces some artesania, but the work is not seen in many markets like those of other municipalities. Many people have migrated to other parts of Mexico and abroad in order to make a living. Some return to farm or start a small business with the help of the money they saved while away.

The women, like Bervalina García Nuñez,  wear long huipiles of manta (cotton fabric) or tergal (good quality synthetic fabric) decorated with woven brocades and with raised embroidery that can be seen in Chenalhó as well. The current huipil is red and white — the women favor white tergal although some communities wear some pastel colors as well. The yoke is embroidered with cross-stitch in the middle of the huipil, front, back and bottom have symbols embroidered with a stitch called kejeme luch (the stitch that walks) using acrylic thread and is in relief.

The cross-stitched huipiles with flowery yokes that represent the hills and the four cardinal points; hearts represent the peace and harmony between each of the Sun God´s children. The leaves represent the trees that are born from the union between the cross and the heart. Around the neck of the garment, the birds represent present benedictions. These huipiles started appearing in the 1970s and before that time the women wore simple garments that were woven on the back-strap loom and were brocaded.

An impediment to the women earning, is that they do not know where to sell their work. Grupo Luchetik was formed in 2016 as a solution to this problem. They registered with the Instituto de la Casa de Artesanía de Chiapas, hoping that the Instituto would assist them in getting invited to shows where they could sell their work. The women who go to shows to sell for the group receive a 10% commission on the sales and their expenses are paid by all the women. In this group only three women are able to leave the village to sell.
