Alvaro Farias Aguirre is from Pátzcuaro, Michoacán. He learned his wood working and painting from his father. As time progressed, they began to make nichos (made from mixed-media a recessed display box, much like a shadow box,

They adapted the Roman Catholic retablo, which is a painting of a patron saint on wood or tin.) and crosses.

Each person is responsible for part of the production process and work with six other artisans, as well as Alvaro’s wife who does the gold and silver leafing. Their work is often adorned with traditional milagros giving each piece its own unique look.

Milagro means miracle. A person will ask a favor of their favorite saint. In order to repay the saint after the favor has been granted, this small religious charm in the form of body parts, animals, etc. is pinned or placed in the church as an object of devotion. Milagros can be gold, silver, tin, lead, wood, bone, or wax The heart milagro (also known as the sacred heart) represents love, healing and gratitude. A heart with wings symbolizes ascension, the five-pointed star symbolizes divine light.
