The town of Amatenango del Valle, Chiapas, is a Maya Tzeltal-speaking community located on the Pan American Highway near San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Amatenango is known as “The Chiapas Capital of Pottery” where local women artisans display and sell their works under covered arches or from their homes/workshops in the village. The skills necessary to produce the unique pottery of Amatenango have historically been passed down from mother to daughter over the generations.
Doña Bonifacio Pérez López learned her art from her mother as a child. She married a talented man named Alberto Bautista Gómez. Don Alberto was the man who first started making free-standing jaguars and decorated the traditional Amatenango water jars with jaguars. Until then, pottery was the domain of women, and all the men who were farmers helped with the painting of the pieces, but Don Alberto broke the mold and worked with clay as well as painting the figurines. He was very talented and his work was amazing. He was featured in the Grandes Maestros del Arte Popular book published by Fomento Cultural Banamex. All along his wife, Doña Bonifacia, worked with him and taught their son, Ramón, and daughters, Elena and Luisa, as well.
Doña Bonifacia’s son, Ramón, made the first black jaguar painted with acrylic paint. He also showed the same talent as his father had, but unfortunately passed away while still young. His widow, Teresa, continues carrying on his style of work.
Elena inherited talent from her parents and does very unique and wonderful work. She is one of the top sculptors in Amatenango but remains quietly at home with her mother working mainly for collectors. Luisa, her younger sister, lives in the same home and helps with production and usually dedicates herself to painting. Elena's daughter is ten years old and already working with clay.
The Feria is proud to have had Elena and her mother exhibit, especially since they do not normally travel to sell their art. They will be showing some of their well-known work such as monkeys, horses, iguanas, wild boars, baskets with birds and, of course, the famous jars and jaguars still done in the style of Alberto Bautista. Their work is left natural or painted with natural pigments or acrylic paints depending on the taste of their customers. Elena and her mother have been awarded many prizes at the state competition Fray Bartolome. Their work is also featured in the collection of many collectors.
