This  family group of 11 was formerly known as Grupo Santa Lucia.  They have reorganized after its  president, Angela López Pérez, married and passed on the management of the group to her sister Lucia.  The mother Maria , the two sisters, Francisca and Simona continue to be part of the group as well as other relatives. Angela´s husband a potter as well work with them as well.

The women are known for the quality of their work and have won many state competitions and some national as well with their clay toys, cooking vessels as well as various decorative vessels.

The town of Amatenango del Valle is known for its women potters who line the International Carretera, one hour south of San Cristóbal de las Casas. Traditionally the women made utilitarian and ceremonial vessels, but with the advent of metal cookware  and the demand for clay pots diminishing , the women started making decorative items as well, and now the town is know for its jaguars and palomas.

Thanks to the  help of the Los Amigos del Arte Popular and the technological help of the Escuela Nacional de Cerámica the group built a smokeless kiln in April 2020, just in time before Covid-19 shut down. The kiln allows them to fire during bad weather and has improved the quality of their product and  allows them to use sand that clay that can be fired at higher temperature, cutting back on breakage.

The people of Amatenango del Valle are primarily  farmers and are known for their fresh corn and chickens and of course their potters. Traditionally, women worked the clay and men painted it  but times are changing and the work separation according to sex is changing and you can find some men potters and women who paint their own pottery.
